Les Âmes Perdues
with Wouter Van Looy & Muziektheater Transparant
2017
Four players dive deep into the cabaret of the early 20th century. Never was highbrow so popular and lowbrow so elitist. The art world embraced the entertainment of the nightclubs and vice versa (and that can be taken literally). Political, social, and sensual satire was intoxicated there with the scent of eau-de-cologne. Poulenc wrote a tribute to Piaf, Britten vegetated at night in the Berlin cabarets, and Klaus and Erika Mann's Pfeffermühle was a free stage for the soul.
But in Les Âmes perdues there is no historical reconstruction of this glorious period, no nostalgic drivel! Even more than the repertoire, the ensemble adopts what was popular then and has not lost its luster. Satire, self-irony, and parody mingle with intensity, sincerity, and authenticity. That recipe is timeless. Eh oui, zeitlos!
Les Âmes perdues opens its café-theatre… café-concert… café-chantant… for you once again. Apply your lipstick, adjust your sequins, powder your nose, for an idiosyncratic textual musical piece in which various styles, eras, and storylines dance together. Inconsistent yet coherent, for that is simply the advantage of cabaret. Et puis dansez! For the only certainty is the uncertainty of tomorrow.

“The four actors—together they form the brand-new collective LÂP—prove to be excellent performers who swap the piano for the accordion or the mourning dress for the Eve costume in no time. … a fresh and infectious soirée composée. This calling card of LÂP is being carefully kept in our wallets.”
Gilles Michiels in De Standaard
