After the First World War, the murder mystery became wildly popular, with its grotesque murder plots, cut telephone lines, secret passages, locked rooms, know-it-all baronesses, skillful butlers, stubborn detectives, and the words “someone in this room did it.” Here, horror has hardly any impact, and justice always prevails. The more intense the real world, the more successful the whodunit genre. And that is true today as well.
In 2023, Les Âmes Perdues, Muziektheater Transparant, Tom Goossens, and Mitch Van Landeghem already went head over heels with the operetta genre in Fledermaus Forever. In Killer Thriller, they aim their musical-theatrical poison arrows at the whodunit genre, performing not one, but multiple murder mysteries simultaneously. A film screening is brutally interrupted, someone goes missing at sea, characters drop dead only to rise again in another story, and plot lines interlock. Lies, corpses, and songs pile up as the tension between the familiar and the unreliable mounts. Meanwhile, the question arises as to why someone always has to die to make for a good story. What is so sexy about a murder mystery? What music is best for getting murdered? And above all: who did it?
Brace yourself for an abundance of crime. Less is murder!
