The Visit

The bankrupt town of Güllen is awaiting a special event. 45 years ago, Claire Zachanassian left as a poor girl. Now she returns for a short visit as the richest woman in the world. The inhabitants hope that she will save the impoverished town with her fortune. In exchange for the money, she demands the death of her childhood sweetheart, the grocer Alfred Schil. The population indignantly rejects the proposal. But how long can a person in need resist the temptations of money and the pressure of the masses? Dürrenmatt paints a ruthless and grim picture of society, of a fragile Europe, and of the inescapable consequences of the capitalist system.
“An honorable mention goes to music theater collective LÂP, which provides tasteful and spirited musical accompaniment. At opportune moments, the four musicians shine with beautiful harmonies or a heated, cello-backed version of Patti Smith’s 'Gloria'. It is the music that lends it cachet time and again…”
